Erewash Borough Council was not given any notice of the potential funding

A Derbyshire council is to be given a surprise £5 million by the Government for cultural projects without any notice and it does not have anything prepared to spend it on. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced in Parliament on Wednesday as part of the national budget that Erewash Borough Council would be given £5 million from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund purely for culture projects.

Asked about funding Erewash Museum, he said: “When DLUHC approach us we will have a better idea of what projects we can put forward. We don’t know if the projects need to be new or existing and we won’t know until our officers are approached.” The letter to Erewash, from Levelling Up Minister Jacob Young, details: “Erewash Borough Council has provisionally been awarded up to £5 million of capital funding as part of the Spring Budget to support local culture projects in your area.

“The council will be working with key stakeholders to identify where the potential investment can be put to best use for the benefit of all residents across Erewash.” During last night’s meeting, deputy leader Cllr Becca Everett called the museum a “prized asset” and “one of my favourite parts of the borough”.
