— and love. Per the movie's official synopsis,person in her grade, and her best friend Liz as their friendship is tested when Erin develops feelings for the new girl in class, Sydni. Erin and Liz are about to enter a new chapter of their loyal friendship and their adolescence — middle school is ending, Liz is accepted to a private high school, and Erin is experiencing real romantic feelings for the first time.
The starring trio is comprised of actors Elliot Stocking as Erin, Jesyca Gu as Liz, and Rosali Annikie as Syndi — all three can be see in the film's poster and full-length official trailer, both debuting exclusively onis written and directed by Julianna Notten, a Toronto-based award-winning queer filmmaker.
“Growing up, I was exposed to the usual assortment of Disney fairy tales and nineties classics loaded with conventional girl-meets-boy narratives,” writes Notten in their director's statement about the film. “It was an all too familiar story, and began to feel like the only one.” “As I was writing the feature-length script, I re-read my grade eight diary and suddenly realized why Erin felt so natural for me to write,” continues Notten. “Like Erin, I was a tender, fiery ball of emotion and spunk who was suddenly having to deal with all these changes, and maybe not handling them as gracefully as I could have. In many ways I wish I could have been as out and unapologetically myself as Erin is.
“From the moment the audience meets her, they know that she is extremely confident in who she is,” Notten explains. “This is not the kind of representation queer youth are used to seeing on screen, and that is exactly why this representation is vital.
