Fighting in Yemen has intensified with air strikes on Houthi targets and a claimed missile attack on a Saudi oil facility, marking a significant escalation since 2022. Meanwhile, an 18-year-old involved in the Newcastle Knights crowd crash was denied bail ahead of the grand final. In aviation news, a flydubai captain detailed the terror of a co-pilot attack in the cockpit that forced an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.

Fighting in Yemen has sharply escalated, with government forces launching air strikes on Houthi targets in Sanaa, Saada and Taiz. Dozens of fighters have been killed in clashes around Taiz, while a maternity hospital in the capital was damaged by a nearby strike. The Iran-backed Houthis have also claimed a ballistic missile and drone attack on a Saudi Aramco oil facility near Riyadh, where flames and smoke were seen.

The Reuters news agency says it is the most serious escalation since a 2022 truce largely stopped cross-border attacks between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia. The captain of a flydubai passenger jet has described the terrifying moment he realised his co-pilot was attacking him in the cockpit last week. Smit Machchhar was repeatedly struck as the Tel Aviv-bound plane plunged almost 14-thousand feet in less than 30 seconds.

Despite his injuries, he managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to intervene before the aircraft made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. Captain Machchhar has now recounted the attack in a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"Suddenly after about 4 or 5 minutes there was a big blow to the back of my head, my first thought was that there was a catephroic damage to the aircraft amd something is not right but after that the blow s kept coming one after the other and that's when I realsised it's not the aircraft its the other guy who was in the cockpit with me. "An 18-year-old driver accused of crashing into a crowd of Newcastle Knights fans and injuring 10 people has been refused bail.

Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe is facing nine charges, including dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, after the crash at Wallsend yesterday morning. A five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man remain in a serious but stable condition, while four other people are still in hospital. Mr Samarasinghe did not apply for release when he appeared in Newcastle Bail Court today, and his case will return to court on October 15.

Cornell University in the United States is facing mounting pressure over allegations a female student was gang raped by fraternity members in 2024. The woman, identified in court documents as Jane Doe, has sued the university and seven former students, raising fresh questions about how the case was handled. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has ordered an independent review, while the criminal investigation has been handed to the state Attorney General.

Cornell president Michael Kotlikoff says the university must do better and has pledged greater transparency.

''I want to acknowledge something that can be difficult for an institution to say. We don't have all the answers, but we are committed to investigating and finding the answers our community deserves. That broader work should include a serious look at the role of fraternities and sororities in campus life.

"Australians in five states and territories have woken up an hour shorter on sleep, after daylight saving kicked in overnight. Clocks jumped forward in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and the ACT, while Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory stayed put. And as Australians adjust, US President Donald Trump is pushing to scrap the twice-yearly clock change altogether.

''We want to get away from this ridiculous way and custom of, every, twice a year, turning your clocks back. Turning the clocks forward. Being late for dinner. Being late for very important meetings.

It's ridiculous. And if you look at the public, they agree.

"Grand final fever has taken hold across Sydney and Newcastle, with just a few hours to go until tonight’s NRL decider between the Newcastle Knights and Sydney Roosters. In Newcastle, some fans are settling in to watch from home, with supporters soaking up the Knights’ first grand final appearance in 25 years.

Meanwhile in Sydney, Roosters fans are already heading for the game, including Xavier Savala, the brother of Roosters player Hugo Savala, who was part of a large group gathering in Bronte.

"We've got about 120 tickets today with all these boys around here and we're getting a party bus to the game and a party boat too so it should be good fun.
