Escondido police will check on child car seats at a Thursday event [Breaking]
Parents can check whether they’ve installed their child safety seats correctly — or have them reinstalled properly if they goofed — this Thursday at the Escondido police station.
The department is participating in Child Passenger Safety Week. People are invited to come to the city’s police and fire headquarters building at 1163 N. Centre City Parkway on Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Safety technicians will show parents and caregivers how to properly install car seats. They also will talk about appropriate seats based on a child’s age and size.Federal officials say nearly half of all car seats are installed incorrectly, the Police Department said in a news release.
California law requires all children under 2 years old to ride in a rear-facing car seat, unless the child is 40 or more pounds or is 40 or more inches tall. Parents are encouraged to children in rear- and forward-facing seats as long as possible. Children who are 8 and older can ride in the back seat, with a seat belt, if they are at least 4 feet, 9 inches tall.
