With 69 per cent of residential aged care homes running at a loss, many hope the federal government will fully fund a recent pay rise awarded to the sector's workers.
There are fears regional aged care providers will struggle to fund a pay rise recently awarded to workers by the Fair Work Commission.
But Tori Castledine, who is on the board of the non-profit Esperance Aged Care Facility on Western Australia's south coast, said while she was happy for workers, it would make things "incredibly challenging" for providers."Really early modelling suggests this pay rise will cost the facility an additional $1.35 million a year, which is a lot of money," she said.
"The government is considering the detail of the latest increases as part of the budget process," a spokesperson said.Aged care workers win their Fair Work case for a wage rise of between 7 and 28.5 per cent for the entire sector. The aged care sector is already under enormous strain, with 69 per cent of residential facilities making an operating loss in 2021-22, despite increased government investment.
