But EU leaders, concerned of the legal risks posed by the upcoming European Parliament elections in May, said they would only approve an extension to May 22, and on the condition that the UK parliament passes the divorce deal next week. “The decision today underlines the importance of the House of Commons passing a Brexit deal next week so we can bring an end to the uncertainty and leave in a smooth and orderly manner.”
