ANALYSIS: Europe is sweltering, but winter is coming — and Putin is in a race against time
After their failures before Kyiv and Kharkiv, the Russians have settled into a different pattern of battlefield operations. Now, the Russians let their artillery lead the way. They have leveraged this in the east to draw the Ukrainians into the Russian's preferred way of war — relentless, crunching attrition.
In the wake of this, the Russians have reduced their operational tempo to prepare for a subsequent operation to secure the Donetsk region. During this preparatory phase, the Russians have conducted limited attacks around Kharkiv and Izyum. But it is the Slovyansk-Bakhmut defensive line, the city of Kramatorsk, and regions further west, that will be the focus of the next phase of Russia’s eastern offensive.
First, the Russians. They have captured some ground in the east but are on the defensive in the south. The Ukrainians are slowly, inexorably taking back their southern territory. To compound the Russian’s operational challenges, the introduction of accurate, long range HIMARS rockets has caused significant disruption to Russian logistics. These rockets, used cleverly by the Ukrainians, are destroying Russian artillery ammunition stockpiles, as well as tactical headquarters containing Russian senior officers. Even air defence systems have shown to be vulnerable to these rockets.
