The space telescope will map galaxies as far as 10 billion light-years from Earth across an immense expanse of the sky, exploring 'cosmic noon', an era when most stars were forming.
abc.net.au/news/europe-euclid-space-telescope-launched/102551882A European-built orbital satellite has been launched to space on a mission to shed new light on the mysterious cosmic phenomena known as dark energy and dark matter. The satellite will complete a month-long voyage in solar orbit 1.
It is a position of gravitational stability between the Earth and Sun called the Lagrange Point Two, or L2. The 2-tonne spacecraft is also equipped with instruments designed to measure the intensity and spectrum of infrared light from those galaxies to precisely determine their distances. The mission focuses on two foundational components of the dark universe.
The other is dark energy, an equally enigmatic force believed to explain why the expansion of the universe, as scientists learned in the 1990s, has long been accelerating.Scientists estimate dark energy and dark matter together make up 95 per cent of the cosmos, while ordinary matter that we can see accounts for just per cent.Euclid was designed and built entirely by ESA, with the US space agency NASA supplying photo detectors for its near-infrared instrument.
