Electric vehicle owners willing to cop road-user charges amid complaints they are “free riding” on roads paid by petrol and diesel excise.
, with a survey showing a large majority of relatively wealthy zero-emissions car owners back a system that taxes them.
They also worry that failure to introduce a system in the near term that captures vehicles that use little or no fuel subject to federal excise, at a time when ownership rates are relatively low, risks missing a window of opportunity for tax reform. By the time EV ownership rates are higher, they say, it will be far more politically difficult to introduce road user charging.

The automobile association, which represents state and territory motoring clubs with 8.7 million members, polled 1910 voters last week. Some 69 per cent were in support of charging EV road users, 15 per cent were opposed, and 17 per cent unsure.
