Evan Rachel Wood is speaking more openly about her relationship with Marilyn Manson, revealing new details of the alleged abuse she faced “24/7, for four years.”
’s choice to explore Manson’s own past trauma. “Violence in the home is the root of so many issues in this country, in the world. It bleeds into almost every area of society, and we don’t even realize it,” Wood explained. “And violence begets violence. It is a cycle.” She continued, “There are people that can stop the cycle and there are some people, I feel, like Brian”—mentioning Manson by his given name, for the first and only time during the interview—“that don’t want help.
Wood also addressed the ways in which sexual abuse statutes of limitations don’t reflect the years it can take to “process, understand, and heal” from trauma. She compared her own time with Manson, “calculated in brainwashing and isolation,” to being in a cult. “When you’re in it, you can’t see the forest through the trees. Up is down; down is up,” Wood said. “It’s you two against the world, and it is a secret that nobody will ever be able to understand.
At the root of her decision to dive back into this traumatic relationship, Wood says, is the threat Manson poses to others. “I don’t believe that he will stop until he is stopped,” she told Noah. “And sometimes the greatest act of love is stopping that person from hurting themselves, or hurting anybody else.”
