North Sydney Girls High also wants to lift academic writing skills and aims to have 70 per cent of its students achieving in the top two NAPLAN bands by 2024. “Improvement in academic writing skills of students will enable greater access to Band 6 HSC results,” its plan said. The hard work has been paying off.

The school has invested heavily in books the boys might enjoy, including non-fiction books. “I don’t care what trash they’re reading — as long as they’re reading,” Hughes said.
