Senator David Shoebridge has declared the Greens intend to become an even more major presence in federal politics, following his election as the party's new leader after Larissa Waters' reluctant resignation. The party has a primary vote of about 12 per cent in most opinion polls and holds the balance of power in the upper house - and the Senator says he intends to make the most of it.

"What has become so clear - after four years of this government and years before - is that we are not here to make the Labor party any better. The Greens are here to replace them.

" Senator Shoebridge is renowned for his forthright approach to attacking political opponents in Senate Estimates hearings and press conference, along with his stances on defence and foreign affairs, including his opposition to AUKUS. New South Wales Police are investigating the alleged desecration of Islamic graves at a cemetery in Sydney's southwest. Images show multiple headstones have been damaged at the Al Nur Cemetery in Narellan, where graves were similarly targeted with pig heads following the Bondi shooting.

The cemetery is owned and managed by the Lebanese Muslim Association, who says the incident was an act of hatred directed at Muslims. The association has released a statement saying there is something particularly vile about targeting the dead. The Coalition says the latest inflation figures give the Reserve Bank no incentive to lower interest rates, with headline inflation reaching 4 per cent in August.

News of the inflation rate has come a day after Reserve Bank hiked rates to a 15 year high of 4.6 per cent. The opposition argues that the government's spending habits are to blame, while the government says both international and domestic factors are at play. Opposition Treasurer Tim Wilson says these latest figures present a grim forecast for households across Australia.

"Australian households are also doing it tough because when they go to the supermarket, they're paying more and getting less in their trolley. What we know is that they're experiencing real pain as the cost of basic goods goes up. Bread has increased by twenty-two point two percent under the Albanese government. The price of milk has gone up by nearly a third under the Albanese government.

Coffee and tea has increased by 23.7 per cent under the Albanese government.

" The nation's top cyber spy says Australia has access to some of the best artificial intelligence safeguards in the world and should be using them to help the rest of the world. Australian Signals Directorate director-general Abigail Bradshaw says her team have been working with non-publicly available A-I software for more than six months to strengthen government systems - something many other developed countries had not been able to do.

The comments have come after every government department was ordered to fast-track throwing away old cyber systems to mobilise against malicious A-I, days after a Medicare portal became the first known Australian government system to fall victim to an AI hack. Ms Bradshaw says Australia must properly engage with the new technology in order to protect against it.

"I think our prospects actually for engaging meaningfully with that technology, for leveraging the best technology in the world to defend Australian networks, is optimized if we play a greater role in the development of that technology. And training is one of those vital aspects.

" A gentle giant named 89 Backpack has been named the winner of this year's Fat Bear Week, a contest to decide the heftiest bear in Alaska's Katmai National Park and Preserve. Park rangers say the new champion got his name when he was a cub, after his paw was injured and he would regularly catch rides on the back of his mother while she swam in the river.

The nonprofit running the long-standing contest says Backpack was crowned the champion after more than 100,000 votes. The Fat Bear competition celebrates the resilience of the 2200 brown bears that live in the preserve on the Alaska Peninsula, which extends from the state's southwest corner toward the Aleutian Islands.

Australia's A-League teams are taking a wait and see approach to the news that Manchester City are facing sanctions after being found guilty of a $1.7 billion scheme to circumvent the Premier League's financial rules. A-Leagues team Melbourne City has been owned by City Football Group since 2014, with the club's vice-chairman Simon Pearce sitting on the board of directors for Manchester City.

Australian Professional League chief executive Steve Rosich has declined to comment on the scandal, but is adamant the Group's involvement in the A-Leagues would not impact the reputation of the Australian competition. Meanwhile, Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano has told staff on a video that the club does not agree with any of the findings and intends to push back hard.

"This has gone for so long that it is important to remind ourselves that the whole Premier League case against us is based on a single false accusation: that the owners' personal money was somehow and secretly put into the club via some sponsors from Abu Dhabi. This is just not true.
