The Little Mermaid ending explained

After enlisting the help of Ursula, the sea witch to squash her curiosity, Ariel trades her beautiful voice for legs so she can finally visit the surface.However, there has been one important change made at the end of the film, which has left some fans needing a little explanation. Here’s everything you need to know about the ending of The Little Mermaid…
Her transformation also means she belongs to Ursula, who takes Ariel with her as she plunges back into the sea. Ursula creates a whirlpool which causes shipwrecks to rise from the ocean floor. As Eric manages to jump on one, Ariel joins him and - just as Ursula is about to kill Eric - Ariel is the one who takes over the wrecked ship and impales the sea with its bowsprit.
