Strictly Come Dancing will return to Blackpool this year and with it, so will the sparkles and legacy of the BBC show
When you think of Strictly Come Dancing you often think of glitz, glamour and Blackpool. The Lancashire town has been the proud host of the BBC show when it moves away from the usual London studios for one episode in a series.
The Ballroom was designed by Frank Matcham and opened in 1899. The floor measures 120ft x 102ft with 30,602 separate blocks of mahogany, oak and walnut. Why does Strictly go to Blackpool? The BBC dancing competition first went to Blackpool during the 2004 series and returned in 2005. However, it wasn't until 2009 that it became a regular occurrence, with the contestants who made it that for in the competition seeing Blackpool as a milestone.
Many viewers hoped that the tradition would be restored the following year, but as the pandemic still swept across the country the programme didn't come to Blackpool for a second year in a row. At the time, executive producer Sarah James told the Mirror: "We are all so sad that we won’t be able to get to Blackpool this year but can’t wait to be back dancing at the one and only Blackpool Tower Ballroom in the future.

The episode saw celebrities Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Patrick Robinson, Ben Cohen, Ashley Taylor Dawson, Fiona Fullerton, Abbey Clancy, Mark Benton, Susanna Reid and Natalie Gumede.
