Controversial former AFL players' agent Ricky Nixon is unable to pay his lawyers in a fight against assault charges.

The 60-year-old is charged with throwing a missile - an Australia post package - and assaulting a man in Port Melbourne in March 2022.His lawyer refused to provide police with specifics of Nixon's finances, arguing it was not in the interests of the public or Victoria Police to have that information.

Police opposed an adjournment of the case, noting the additional stress to the alleged victim who has been preparing themselves for the hearing, and for witnesses to be called. Magistrate Rohan Lawrence, who viewed details of Nixon's finances, determined he would not be able to fund defence representations for the September hearing and it would be improper for him to represent himself.
