Breaking: Ex-congressman Aaron Schock strikes deal to avert prosecution over allegations he misspent campaign and government money

By Matt Zapotosky Matt Zapotosky National security reporter covering the Justice Department Email Bio Follow March 6 at 12:05 PM Federal prosecutors on Wednesday finalized a deal to resolve the criminal charges against a former Illinois congressman accused of misspending campaign and government money for his personal benefit — allowing the ex-lawmaker to avoid prosecution personally while his campaign committee pleads guilty to a record-keeping violation.

In a statement, Schock said the outcome “validates this case should have never been started in the first place.” The Justice Department last year replaced the prosecutors on the case, and Schock finally struck a deal with the new team from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago. U.S. District Judge Matthew F. Kennelly approved the agreement at a hearing Wednesday.
