Ex-Gov. Codey will not seek re-election to N.J. Senate, ending 50-year tenure
, who stepped in to serve as governor for more than a year in the early 2000s, announced Monday he will retire at the end of his term in January after half a century in Trenton.
The stunning announcement means the vaunted Essex County Democrat will drop his re-election bid and close out his tenure in the New Jersey Legislature exactly 50 years after he was first sworn in, when Richard Nixon was still president.
