A plan to breed big cats in an exotic animal sanctuary in a mystery location in the East Kimberley, has seen the youngest son of former WA premier Colin Barnett dubbed Australia's own tiger king.

The legal importation of live zoo animals to Australia involves meeting strict requirements governed by federal legislation and the relevant state governments.

These assessments look at a range of factors, including the operating procedures of both the exporting and importing facilities, and the suitability of the applicant.The Pearl Coast Zoo which used to operate in Broome has been an inspiration for Sam Barnett's proposal. Mr Barnett said the plan was to initially import the pair of Sumatran tigers from the US to quarantine at a property registered in Queensland.
