AFL: On the Couch's Johnathan Brown raises his big question on why the state of the game is becoming so soft.
The AFL is set to backtrack its stance on clubs’ access to Next Generation Academy graduates, with the move set to have numerous 2024 draft implications.
First introduced in 2017, a key objective of the NGAs is to increase the talent pool of Indigenous and multicultural players. Ahead of the 2021 draft the AFL capped NGA bid-matching at pick 20, before further tightening restrictions prior to the 2022 intake by pushing the boundary out to No. 40. However, this time around, clubs hoping to capitalise on the high-end NGA prospects they helped develop will be made to pay a more adequate draft price than in years past.
Now a Collingwood premiership defender, Isaac Quaynor was able to make his way to his childhood club as the 13th pick in 2018, while Hawthorn snapped up St Kilda NGA product Cam Mackenzie at No. 7 in 2022. Also last year, in addition to Lual landing in Tullamarine and Collard at Moorabbin, Geelong snagged Fremantle-affiliated tall Mitch Edwards, while Collingwood got a steal in Hawthorn NGA product Tew Jiath — younger brother of the Hawks’ Changkuoth.
“He’s linked to the Dons’ . If the AFL changes its rules to allow the Victorian clubs to bid for their prospects — as Andrew Dillon has said they might — they could bid for this kid and match a bid.“If not, they might have pick 10 or 12 or 14 — you just go and get him anyway, you just go and draft him. When was the last great small forward that Essendon had? kicked 32 and 34 goals.
