Former Australian ambassador to Lebanon Ian Parmeter has given insight into Hezbollah and the threat it poses to Israel amid the Hamas conflict.
Hezbollah is a Shiite Muslim political party and militant group that was formed as the byproduct of Israel’s invasion of Lebanon in 1982. “Israel went into Lebanon in 1982 to expel Palestinians from bases there, and they succeeded in doing that, but at the same time, they radicalised the Shia in southern Lebanon,” Mr Parmeter told Sky News Australia.“Hezbollah is now a major player in Lebanese politics."
Mr Parmeter went on to tell Sky News Australia what would happen if Hezbollah were to involve itself in the Israel-Hamas conflict. “If they do get involved, they will certainly send a lot of rockets into Israel, which could overwhelm the iron dome defence system, which Israel has,” he said.
