Rishi Sunak announced earlier this month that he plans to add the XL Bully to the banned breed list

An expert has shared advice on what XL Bully owners should do if they want to keep hold of their dogs amid growing clamour to ban the breed.

“The ‘American XL Bully’ is not currently a ‘recognised breed’ in the UK, and the Government will firstly need to define what the breed looks like. It’s not illegal to own an ‘American XL Bully’ at this time and won’t be until the law has been updated. Lynne said that to help themselves prepare, owners of ‘American XL Bully’ dogs can consider the following steps:Muzzle training “There are lots of misconceptions around muzzles – they aren’t just worn by ‘dangerous dogs’,” continues Lynne. “They can be extremely useful for many situations, including during procedures at the vets.

“If you have concerns about the dangerous or aggressive behaviour of any dog, you should report this to the police or local authority. Only report a dog if you are concerned about their behaviour, simply owning ‘American XL Bully’ dogs does not need to be reported to the authorities at this time."
