Prices have been forecast to leap 20 per cent by the end of 2022, before jumping a further 30 per cent in 2023.
Although bringing prices down in the long term will require industry reform and a large-scale shift to renewables, there are ways people can attempt to reduce the pressure on their own wallets now.Australian Electricity Market Initiative coordinator Gillaume Roger said even a small reduction during times of peak demand could make a big difference."So, people can pre-cool their house, shade their windows to decrease the heat load indoors, and shift their consumption over the day.
Professor Iain MacGill from the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications and Collaboration for Energy and Environmental Markets at the University of New South Wales said there were also proactive options people could take. "Think about rooftop PV if that's an option. Shorter showers, higher temperature settings on the air-conditioner thermostat can all make a big difference," he said.
"And if you are buying appliances, look for the more energy efficient ones – they'll save you money in the long run."
