Moto GP: Francesco Bagnaia has taken the lead of the Championship standings after a disaster crash in Germany for Jorge Martin

In the German Grand Prix ahead of MotoGP’s mid-season break in early July, the Spaniard had a comfortable lead and was looking at a 20-point championship advantage over nearest title rival Francesco Bagnaia when, his late blunder handing Bagnaia a win, the 30-point swing from a split-second stumble seeing him relinquish the championship lead for the first time since March.

Kazakhstan, originally set to debut in July last year, was scheduled for June this year, but that date became logistically untenable because of flooding in Central Asia. The race in Sokol was then scheduled for September in a slot originally set aside for the Indian Grand Prix after last year’s debut at the Buddh International Circuit, the Indian round having been postponed to 2025 after reports suggesting money owed to Dorna by the event promoter had not been paid.

He made amends in the San Marino GP in 2021 with victory, and was on course to win the Emilia-Romagna round a month later when he again crashed from the lead, handing Marc Marquez a victory that, three years later, remains the Spaniard’s most recent success. Bagnaia’s non-score confirmed Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo as that year’s world champion.

He missed both visits by the series to Misano in 2020 after contracting covid, and in 2021 he fell off, remounted, got hit with a track limits warning and retired from last place with damaged bodywork in the first of the two Misano races, and crashed out of the other while running 10th.
