Deep in the desert of New South Wales, a pair of old mining towns now draw movie buffs looking for ‘Mad Max’ and a giant stilettoSITUATED IN THE far west of New South Wales, Broken Hill is Australia’s longest-running mining town.
For a time in the late 1800s it had the world’s richest deposits of lead, zinc and silver. But I have little interest in mining. My fascination with Broken Hill and the neighboring town of Silverton is purely cinematic. “The Road Warrior” , titled “Mad Max 2” in Australia, was shot here; so were many scenes from “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” and the cult classic “Wake in Fright.
