Explosive claims gang ‘blackmailed’ ex-player as AFL drugs policy under fresh scrutiny

The AFL and its controversial illicit drugs policy is under fire again after shocking revelations surrounding an ex-player.

SIA stated in its findings announced last month: “SIA, along with Australian law enforcement and intelligence agencies, have identified ongoing threats of criminal infiltration of Australian sport through the supply of illicit drugs and subsequent exposure of athletes and support staff to exploitation”.According to the report, the parents of the player were sent a photo of the footballer alongside members of the gang and were told to pay the player’s drug debts.

Wilkie says the family informed him their son witnessed senior AFL players using illicit drugs and smoking from ice pipes just days after he was recruited to a football club through the AFL Draft as an 18-year-old. “Rather than helping players get off drugs, the medical model has enabled players to continue taking drugs in secret.”
