Extra parental leave for NSW workers who split child-rearing equally | angus_dalton
The NSW public sector will offer 14 weeks’ paid parental leave under a government plan to scrap the distinction between primary and secondary carers and encourage parents to spend equal time raising their newborns.
Premier Dominic Perrottet said only 12 per cent of people taking paid primary parental leave in NSW were men.“While most parents across Australia are entitled to paid primary parental leave, only 12 per cent of those who take it are men,” Premier Dominic Perrottet said.Under current public sector rules, only the parent deemed the primary carer can take 14 weeks leave, whereas the second parent can only access two weeks of paid leave at the time of their child’s birth or adoption.
“These changes to our parental leave offerings will encourage more equal sharing of caring responsibilities right from the start of a child’s life,” Minister for Women Bronnie Taylor said.Single parents will automatically access the full 16 weeks’ leave and the scheme will also be extended to long-term foster parents.
