The Russo brothers, who wrote and produced both Extraction movies, address the chances of a third movie ahead of the sequel's release on Netflix.
Ahead of the sequel's release, the Russo brothers are addressing the chances of Extraction 3. The first Extraction film introduced Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a black-market mercenary who must rescue an international crime lord's kidnaped son. Despite nearly dying at the end of the first film, Tyler Rake is returning for another high-stakes mission in Extraction 2, which releases June 16 on Netflix.
Now, ahead of Extraction 2's release date, the chances of a third movie are being addressed by the Russo brothers, who had a hand in writing and producing the first two directed by Sam Hargrave. Joe Russo, who has sole screenplay credit on the first two films, didn't say that Extraction 3 is currently being developed, though it is certainly a possibility if the sequel is received well.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT I mean, you never want to anticipate the audience's response, but there's certainly room for an Extraction 3. There are some surprises in Extraction 2 that could open up the world of Extraction, on top of which, I think Sam Hargrave did an incredible job with this film, and I think that he has topped the first one.
What Extraction 3 Could Be About With the sequel seeing Tyler Rake returning for a new high-stakes mission unrelated to the first film, a potential franchise could adopt an anthology format and find the black-market mercenary embarking on standalone extraction missions with each installment. Extraction 2 will feature some surprises that expand the fictional world, as Russo teases, but whether that be with a second sequel or potential prequel for Hemsworth's character is unclear.
As Russo says, Extraction 3's chances likely rest on how audiences respond to the sequel. The first Extraction film was released to largely positive reviews for its electric action sequences and Hemsworth's performance, though some criticized its violence as gratuitous and its story as generic. Shortly after its release in 2020, Extraction became the most-watched Netflix movie ever, though it has since been overtaken.
