Australia is set to swelter this week, as a heatwave roasts parts of the nation's north and the south-east braces for potentially record-breaking December temperatures.

A temperature spike has already sent the mercury soaring in parts of New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria over the past few days, while Queensland and the Northern Territory are staring down"extreme" heatwave conditions in some areas, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. "It's pretty ominous weather at the moment, we've got that hot weather sliding across SA and into Victoria and, of course, western NSW is cooking," he said.
Total fire bans and extreme fire danger warnings are in place across western and central Victoria and eastern South Australia on Monday, with authorities also issuing a warning to locals aboutHigh fire danger warnings are also in place across much of western NSW. Mount Isa and surrounding areas are subject to"extreme" heatwave conditions through till Wednesday, according to the BOM, while Timber Creek, Elliot, Tennant Creek, and Alpurrurulam in the NT will also see blistering temperatures.
