A day after El Niño was formally declared by the Bureau of Meteorology, fire bans are in place as hot and dry conditions are forecast across New South Wales.

That prompted total fire bans in Greater Sydney, and further north including Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and parts of the state's Central West. "I don't believe it's another 2019-20 just because we're not on the back of a four-year drought, however, it is the most serious risk we've faced since that fire season," he said.
The cool southerly change will move up the South Coast in the afternoon to reach the Illawarra in the evening and Sydney near midnight.Almost 30 public, independent and private schools on the state's far South Coast were shut on Tuesday, when fire conditions tipped over to catastrophic in the afternoon.
