A dire warning has been issued for red fire ants - a pest 'worse than rabbits, cane toads, foxes and feral cats combined' - with communities urged to be on high alert for the venomous insect.
The Invasive Species Council issued a warning on Friday for red imported fire ants, an extremely venomous ant species that is lethal to humans.
The alarm was sounded after an outbreak of the insect was found at a pony club in Gold Coast’s Tallebudgera locality, just 5.5km from NSW. Picture: Invasive Species Council Since being discovered in Australia in 2001 – presumably coming in through an overseas freight container – they have been confined to south-east Queensland.
On July 13, a “unanimous commitment” from agriculture ministers across the country revealed funding for the program would be brought forward under a new response targeted at stamping out the pest as quickly as possible.
