A plumber has been hit with a massive fine after he put his apprentice in a toolbox and went for a 20-minute drive through Victoria’s high country.

A 31-year-old plumber has been hit with a massive fine after he went for a 20-minute drive with a 19-year-old apprentice locked in a toolbox in the back of his ute.

It was decided the client would accompany them back to Mansfield, and because there were only two seats in the plumber’s ute, the apprentice was transported in the toolbox mounted on the rear tray. The court heard that upon arriving in Mansfield, the apprentice's brother witnessed him released from the toolbox, red-faced and hunched over, while the plumber and his client stood nearby laughing and drinking beer.

The workplace safety watchdog determined it was “reasonably practicable for the director to reduce the risk by not driving the ute, or not allowing it to be driven, when a person was in the toolbox”.
