the FA ‘will consider making Rodgers the next England boss if Southgate decides to quit’ with FA chief executive Mark Bullingham ‘desperate to keep Southgate and will look to tempt him to stay with the offer of a huge wage rise’.
Bullingham is ‘keen to appoint another Englishman’ but the ‘shallow’ talent pool could force him to look elsewhere with Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard ‘deemed not good enough’. With little chance of Eddie Howe or Graham Potter leaving Newcastle or Chelsea anytime soon, Bullingham ‘would be forced to turn to Northern Irishman Rodgers in the hope he would be interested in the England job’.
When asked about his future after England lost to France, Southgate told reporters: “When I’ve been through the past few tournaments my emotions have been difficult to really think through properly in those following few weeks.“I want to make the right decision either way because it has to be the right one to go again, or the right one not to go again and I don’t think tonight is the time to make a decision like that.
