Victorians will not be mandated to wear face masks in public despite the deadly surge in coronavirus cases, Deputy Chief Medical Officer Michael Kidd has said. 9News

"We are encouraging people in the hot spot areas and the areas where community transmission is occurring to wear a mask, particularly in those areas where physical distancing may not be possible," Professor Kidd toldFace masks are not compulsory in Victoria despite the recent deadly coronavirus surge

"We know the incubation period for COVID-19 is between five to seven days but can be up to 14 days. So, we're going to probably still see significant numbers of people being diagnosed each day over the coming week." Professor Kidd said the Victoria-NSW border remained a high risk and crucial line in containing the outbreak in Victoria.

He said the NSW Health contact tracing operations for the outbreak at a Sydney pub were "very extensive". Thousands of people have been ordered to self-isolate after at lease nine infections were traced to the Crossroads Hotel in Casula.
