'We don't allow attacks against people based on sexual orientation or gender identity and are updating our policies to ban the promotion of conversion therapy services.'
You might still accidentally buy a fake watch from Instagram, but starting this week, you won’t be sold a “cure” for homosexuality. Instagram and Facebook have, at last, banned content that promotes conversion therapy, the fraudulent, debunked practice that claims to turn people straight and cisgender.
On Thursday, a spokeperson confirmed that Facebook had updated its policy on hate speech to include promotion of conversion therapy. The policy also applies to Instagram, which Facebook purchased in 2012. "We don't allow attacks against people based on sexual orientation or gender identity and are updating our policies to ban the promotion of conversion therapy services," said Tara Hopkins, Instagram's public policy director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa,Sam Brinton, vice president of advocacy and government affairs at the LGBTQ+ youth organization The Trevor Project, praised the move by the social media giants.
"Conversion therapy is dangerous and widely discredited, and The Trevor Project is pleased to see Facebook and Instagram take action against its promotion on social media,” Brinton said in a statement to. “[LGBTQ+] youth deserve love and support — they should never be exposed to this fraudulent practice."
Conversion therapy is a dangerous, sometimes deadly practice that purports to change a person’s LGBTQ+ identity and includes treatments ranging from electric shocks to talk therapy. It has been rejected by groups like American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association. However, the practice remains legal in more than half the country, with just 20 states and Washington, D.C.
