Guess what's making the rounds again on social media, with a whole new crop of people asking ... but is it REAL?!
Q. A photo is going around on social media showing a woodpecker flying on a weasel's back.The photo started appearing on March 2, 2015 and went viral quickly.Well, it is real, at least according to the amateur photographer, Martin Le-May, who reported that he took the photo while he and his wife were walking in Hornchurch Country Park in east London.
Weasels don't typically prey on woodpeckers, Snopes.com found. But wildlife expert Lucy Cooke said the weasel will often attack animals larger than itself. Cooke also said that the average female weasel doesn't weigh very much, so the photo is plausible. "This is a truly extraordinary image," Cooke said."The green woodpecker is a ground-feeding bird, but weasels normally attack rabbits. The woodpecker is not its usual prey. But weasels are fearless. A female weasel weighs less than a Mars Bar [about 2 ounces] ... so this is why the woodpecker [about a pound] would have been able to take off with it on its back."
