Donald Innes lost the 2020 Sunshine Coast mayoral race by more than 65,000 votes, and after mounting a legal challenge, he’s now lost his court case too.
An unsuccessful mayoral candidate fought a two-year court battle claiming he was disadvantaged at the polls because he encouraged supporters not to vote in person due to the COVID-19 risk.
“At the heart of Mr Innes’ application is his belief that the election ought to have been postponed because of the health risk to voters of COVID-19,” the documents state. Innes filed a Supreme Court application disputing Jamieson’s election win, but it was dismissed in September 2020.In 2021, Innes was ordered to pay court costs of more than $30,000 each to Jamieson and the Electoral Commission of Queensland.
However, lawyers for the ECQ and Jamieson conceded their enforcement warrants against Innes should be removed.
