Qantas boss Alan Joyce acknowledges the airline let customers down in 2022.
“There is always going to be a range of views on how you are doing your job,” he said.
Mr Joyce declined to answer questions about succession – he has committed to staying on until at least the end of 2023 – and it is clear that even following a year of customer complaints, it will be his decision on when to walk away.. ”The board feels we are in good shape for CEO succession as and when that will occur.”In the frame to succeed Mr Joyce are Qantas Loyalty boss Olivia Wirth, chief financial officer Vanessa Hudson, and the new Jetstar boss, Stephanie Tully.
. And supply chain issues, which meant instead of spare parts arriving within hours, it was taking a week, so aircraft were out of action,” Mr Joyce said.Qantas pilots were forced to make an emergency landing in Azerbaijan on December 23 after they received an intermittent fault indicator.“Qantas is now essentially back at pre-COVID-19 levels of service, and customers have told me that they have noticed a dramatic improvement. We are focussed on keeping it that way.
But these gains will have to come against competition from Virgin Australia and Rex. Virgin boss Jayne Hrdlicka has long talked about her desire for the reborn carrier to occupy about 30 per cent of the domestic market – a target it is currently achieving – while the upstart Rex has carved out 5.1 per cent.
Ms Hrdlicka said Virgin will have 42 per cent more tickets for sale in January 2023 than January 2022 – a benefit of its growing Boeing 737 fleet. The CEO said Virgin was “trying to fly as much as possible”, which had led to a fall-off in its on-time performance compared to Qantas and Rex.
