FFD Fire Marshall and FPD determine multiple fires were intentionally set
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Fairbanks Fire Department responded to a fire at the Fairbanks Rescue Mission on Saturday, April 16 around 1:45 p.m.Upon investigation, the FFD fire marshal and Fairbanks Police Department determined there were multiple fires that were intentionally set. The fires started on the male dorm side of the building and included one fire set in a laundry bin, six mattresses were set on fire in a dorm room, and another fire was started in a trash can in the men’s bathroom.
Surveillance video inside the Rescue Mission show Jedidiah Caedmon Chase, who is a resident, seen grabbing something from the laundry bin shortly before it caught on fire. The video later shows Chace coming out of the dorm room that was set on fire.Chase was located outside of the Rescue Mission with the other evacuees and arrested and charged with Arson in the First Degree and transported to Fairbanks Correctional Center.
According to the FPD press release, significant damage was reported from the fires and water damage from putting out the fires. Staff estimate the cost to be $100,000.
