The Socceroos will maintain their underdog status going into the group stages of the World Cup finals in Qatar.
Elation will soon turn to focus for the Socceroos as the men’s national team prepare to take on reigning FIFA World Cup champions France and 11th ranked Denmark to break their tournament ambitions to go beyond the group stages.
Working in the Socceroos favour, is the reigning champions of the last three World Cups have not made it further than the group stages in their title defence.Early on Tuesday morning, the Socceroos secured the second last spot for Qatar 2022, defeating Peru in a penalty shootout 5-4 thanks to a save from substitute goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne, who was brought on to replace captain Mat Ryan. His pre-penalty routine was likened to“I believe this is one of the greatest achievements ever.
“This idea was floated pre-selection that this might eventuate in these kinds of circumstances. For the two-three weeks that we’ve been here, I’ve had that in my mind and I’ve been working on a few things at training,” said Redmayne, who lines up for Sydney FC in the A-League. In the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the Socceroos came 4th in Group C, while France and Denmark secured spots in the final 16.The Socceroos’ first match will be against France on November 23. Australia gave France a run for their money in the last World Cup opener, which the French won 2-1 – it included the first-ever video assistant referee penalty at the tournament.
