The latest chapter in the tragic case of Kerry Newman unfolded at a coroner's court
A devastated family has been told they will likely never get answers as to whether a much-loved mum was dead when she was 'dumped' in an alleyway by two 'despicable' fellow drug users following an overdose.
Halliwell, now 49, of Olney, Rochdale; and Bullen, now 52, of Shirburn, Rochdale, were jailed for two apiece at Minshull Street Crown last November after admitting perverting the course of justice. The hearing was told she suffered from a personality disorder and bipolar disorder and battled drug and alcohol addiction over many years. She was said to be 'always open' to working with health and social care services.
"It would definitely fit in that timeframe," Dr Wilson said. Assistant Coroner Michael Salt said: "The concern is whether she had been mistreated at any point before her death. The circumstances in which she was found in were highly suspicious and have not offered her any respect." Detective Inspector Emma Hulston, who led the investigation, told the court officers had gleaned from statements from witnesses that Kerry had visited an ex-partner's house to see a puppy before leaving at around 2am in the early hours of July 14.
The last time Kerry's bank card was used was on that date. Officers have been unable to get into her mobile phone due to a pin lock. Halliwell and Bullen were both arrested on suspicion of murder on July 19 last year whilst Greater Manchester Police's Major Incident Team pieced together what had happened, the inquest was told.
Coroner Mr Salt said: "Steps should have been taken by these in relation to the care of Kerry when she was there at their flat on Saturday and Sunday, over that weekend. What is the police view in relation to that aspect of matters?" She added that there was 'no evidence she sustained her identified injuries as the result of an assault'. Ultimately, she said she had concluded there was 'no evidence of any suspicious circumstances or third party involvement in the death of Kerry Newman'.
