Corey Devree's family say the 41-year-old's mental health declined rapidly in prison as he tried unsuccessfully to navigate the parole system.
Corey Devree had been doing "the best he's ever done" while living at a rehabilitation centre before he was sentenced.The ABC can reveal a man who died in Bunbury prison earlier this month took his own life while waiting to get approved for parole.
The brother-in-law of the deceased has since told the ABC, Corey Devree took his own life after struggling to secure parole. Facility chief executive Peter Lyndon-James said Devree had shown a genuine commitment to turning his life around.But Mr Lyndon-James said Devree's progress in rehabilitation made no difference in court as the charge he faced carried a mandatory sentence.
Mr Lyndon-James said the service had been trying to help him enrol but all of the board-approved courses it contacted were at capacity.University of WA health researcher Craig Cumming said he had seen no evidence prisons had sufficient resources to prevent future deaths.According to the Justice Department, 13 people have died in custody in WA this year as of October 23.
