Family Promise of Summit County started the Survive to Thrive Destination Homeownership program in early 2022 to help move eligible families from a position of homelessness to homeownership.
Homeownership also offers benefits for the physical and mental health of families, according to Wilhite.Family Promise worked with the Summit County Land Bank to purchase a foreclosed property. The Summit County Department of Community Development partnered with Summit County Public Health to renovate the home. The agencies invested $56,000 in the home to remove lead, install a new HVAC system and add insulation.
Family Promise has established an independent selection committee to decide which family will receive the home. Once a family has been selected, they can live in the home for two years, paying rent. Then if they decide they want to purchase the home, they can do so via a land contract provided through the program. Families in the program will typically be able to pay off their homes in 5-7 years because they won’t have to pay interest, according to Wilhite.
“Our team was proud to support Family Promise’s Survive to Thrive program. This program will help families build wealth and maintain stability, while also helping rehabilitate neighborhoods through the partnership with the land bank. We are excited to see this program and these community partnerships grow in the coming months and years,” County Executive Ilene Shapiro said in a statement.
