Those responsible for his death have never been brought to justice
The frustrated family of a Nottingham taxi driver who was executed in his car are determined cold case murders are not left on the shelf to be forgotten - with the police investigation into his death unsolved 28 years on. On November 22 the relatives of father-of-two Ethsham Ul-Haq Ghafoor marked the anniversary of his shooting nearly three decades ago with a day of prayers and reflection.
Another twist to this entire tragedy, revealed by Nottinghamshire Live in April 2022, was that Mr Ghafoor's brain was retained for 18 years as part of the unsolved police investigation - and, when informed of this, the family went through the agony of repatriating the brain. "We haven't heard from the police since 2014 with a progress update. Cold cases do not go away. Families do not go away, and families still demand answers. Is the cold case review system fit for purpose?
Miss Ghafoor, on behalf of the family, has had a meeting with Labour MP for Nottingham East, Nadia Whittome, who they feel has been a sympathetic ear. They say MP Whittome has written to Nottinghamshire Police raising the family's discourse. "There should be a department with a dedicated family liaison officer in each police force to keep families informed on any progress, however small it may seem, to at least give them hope and confidence that the inquiry is still alive and important?
ACC Griffin added: “We regularly revisit historic cases and will always review any new information we receive. An investigation team will look into any new leads when and if they are identified. And while it will never fully ease the pain, families can hope that justice will be delivered to those who killed their loved ones. It is not the case for everyone - and some families and victims never get that closure.READ MORE: Legacy of Stephanie Slater who was kidnapped and kept in 'coffin-like box'
An inquest into his death ruled it was unlikely to be a suicide or an accident. His mum Jacqueline Mirfin said the words in his last message sent have stayed with her each day for the past 15 years. Police believe several people knew who his killer was but were too worried about their own safety to come forward.
