A Shepparton court has heard the details behind a deadly 2023 crash that left two families in mourning.
A Victorian court has heard how a driver's inattention caused a deadly crash, which claimed her niece's life and that of an unborn child on a country road.
Ms Aldridge, who was 34 weeks pregnant, lost her unborn son Remi and suffered severe abdomen, hip and wrist injuries. What exactly Kemp was doing behind the wheel at the time of the crash remains unclear, it heard. In court, Savannah's mother Bryana Kemp took aim at her sister for "careless negligence" and said she had still not received an apology."What makes me sad is she had not yet gotten to leave her impact on this world. Who will remember her, besides us?" Bryana Kemp said, in a victim statement read out by a prosecutor.
That evening, Ms Aldridge was back in the care of medical experts — this time for emergency surgery to save her life. Remi was delivered stillborn.Ms Aldridge said she and her husband, Andrew, could not bring themselves to pack away the bedroom they had prepared for their son. Ms Aldridge continues to use crutches because of her injuries.
The Aldridges have petitioned the government to follow the lead of NSW and Queensland, where unborn children can be recognised as victims of crime. Judge Chettle called the case "highly emotive", and said he needed to put that aside to consider the facts and the law.
