US President Donald Trump says the unrest seen in cities such as Portland and Kenosha is a result of "far-left ideology" and a hatred of police, rather than systemic racism. President Trump has visited Kenosha, Wisconsin, to assess the damage from violent protests, sparked by the police shooting of Jacob Blake. Mr Blake was shot several times by a white police officer during an altercation on August 23, sparking demonstrations against systemic racism.
Mr Trump defied a request from the state’s governor to stay away over fears the visit would spark further unrest. The president did not visit Mr Blake, nor his family, during his visit. At a roundtable, the preside announced the federal government will allocate $42 million to support public safety and law enforcement in Wisconsin. "To stop the political violence, we must also confront the radical ideology that includes this violence," President Trump said.
