For some people, tasting the pies made in the outback South Australian town of Farina is a bucket-list activity. The pies are cooked in an underground bakery in the otherwise deserted town, with the proceeds going towards restoring Farina's ruins.

It's 5:30am and the first rays of light are yet to illuminate the abandoned town of Farina , in outback South Australia."I could smell that bread from half a kilometre away. Honestly, it was stunning." Farina began as Government Gums and was initially the head of South Australia's Northern Railway line, 600 kilometres north of Adelaide.

"It used to be thought that if you developed a country, the rain would come … but that didn't happen. With the failure of the farms, Farina slowly declined throughout the early to mid-20th century before being officially abandoned in the 1980s.Along with the owner of Farina station, Kevin Dawes, they decided something had to be done to preserve the town.It was while poking around the ruins, they discovered something amazing. Farina's underground bakery was still in one piece.

"I had been hearing about Farina bakery from people for ages. And it just piqued my interest," Ms Horne said.the trip is more than just a holiday."I've done Bamaga, which is the highest bakery in Australia, and I've done Geeveston, which is the most southern. "I love the fact that every proceed raised goes back into restoring that great little vibrant town, which it would have been back in the early 1900s.Analysis by Julia Baird
