Underpinning the demand for land are high levels of profitability across much of the farming sector.

Analysis of farm sales over 40 hectares by rural specialists Elders shows the median price of a hectare of farmland rose 14 per cent in 2021, well up on gains of 9 per cent in the two previous years. In the horticulture sector, border restrictions, labour supply challenges and transport logistics could potentially limit expansion, Mr Briggs said, while providing the impetus for research and development of mechanisation and robotics.The sector is also set to benefit from its ability to generate carbon offsets, amid the push to achieve net zero by 2050.
