SBS On Demand’s Swift Street is a highly watchable urban drama that explores just how far a desperate family will go to avoid a criminal debt collector

The measly sum is to go toward Robert’s $26,000 debt – one that needs to be paid to a merciless crime boss in 10 days or, as these tales go, it’s off with Robert’s kneecaps. Despite their fraught relationship, the father and daughter embark on a high-octane heist rampage across inner-city Melbourne to find the cash.

“You couldn’t knock the froth off a cappuccino, Robert,” Elsie replies, always calling her dad by his first name. “I’m not going to jail, OK? And neither are you. We’re doing it my way.” Between the overdue rental notices pinned to the corkboard in her bedroom, to finding her father about to take his own life in his bedroom, Elsie lives with immense worry and pressure. She loves her dad but can’t stand his deadbeat ways, which leave her fending for both of them.

He adds with a laugh: “I don’t even know how authentically I could even tell a white story. Like, what do you guys eat for dinner?”Spoiler ahead: Each episode is dedicated to a different way to make money. From stealing an ATM to placing bets on a risky car insurance scam, the most impressive is Elsie’s plan to book a stay at a home, list it as a rental and then dress up as real estate agents to secure down payments from wealthy renters.
