The votes are in, and the winner of 'Fat Bear Week' has been crowned.
is an annual tournament that pits bears in Katmai National Park, Alaska against each other in a week-long bracket-style competition. Public voters are invited to evaluate a bear’s “success in preparation for winter hibernation,” i.e. which is the fattest.
Fitz decided to let people vote for their favorite fat bear on Facebook. The one-day event attracted just 1,700 votes in 2014. Last year’s week-long contest elicited nearly 800,000. The contest brings the wilderness of America’s national parks, which are often in remote, undeveloped areas, to fans’ computer screens.
