Fat Bear Week starts October 2 and runs through October 8. Vote for the fattest brown bear in Katmai National Park
The population of Alaskan brown bears are the largest and therefore require an extremely high caloric intake. This means each day they are eating 80-90 pounds of food through the summer and fall to prepare for their long winter sleep. The 80-90 pounds of food turn into three to six pounds of fat.
To pack on the weight, the Alaskan brown bears can’t be picky. They consume berries, flowers, grasses, herbs, and roots. The brown bears also hunt and eat beavers, deer, caribou, salmon, carcasses, and other small mammals. The gains steadily increase, culminating during Fat Bear Week! Brown bear cubs playing in the spring. They are born and nursed to a healthy weight during the winter. After all, the Alaskan brown bears are hibernating through the extremely cold Alaskan winter. They hibernate from five to eight months. During this time, pregnant brown bears give birth and nurse their cubs so the cubs are ready to leave the safety of the den when spring arrives in April or May.
